Lessons learned from volunteering

What is really volunteering? For me it is kind of helping and learning how to help. Because of that I decided to volunteer. The first time I volunteered it was at Islamic center in Zagreb, when there was a competition, so I continued to volunteer at other events and gatherings.

I felt happy and satisfied and realized how wonderful it is to help someone and in return get just a smile, nice words or a hug. Such a small thing is worth a lot. It is not everything about money and material things. I also volunteered with refugees. We collected clothes, shoes, food, hygiene and school supplies and toys for children. I helped some girls learn and write homeworks.

The most important thing I learned from this volunteering is that I now appreciate what I have. These people came to a foreign country, where they have no one and do not know the language, but they are still smiling and positive. Then you realize how much the little things are worth. I have also learned to be human and to empathize with others and be with them when it is most difficult for them. These are important, and unfortunately rare, values in this world.

I love volunteering and helping others because it is an amazing feeling to help those in need. It makes me a better person and more grateful and aware of all the blessings I have in my life.
